The fact that Eklavya was chosen as an official entry to the Oscars has not pleased many. Many filmmakers have been less than happy about it because to their minds there was little or nothing 'exceptional' about the movie. Perhaps, movie lovers too wouldn't really be ecstatic given that the movie bombed at the box office without a whimper. However, Vidhu Vinod Chopra has not taken kindly to the criticism and has hit back quite hard.
Vidhu, reacting to the criticism, questioned the 'credentials' and 'allegiance' of the people who were criticizing the selection of 'Eklavya' and also implied that these were the people whose 'understanding of cinema' was poor. He remarked:
What are the credentials of these people...what is their understanding of cinema...where does their allegiance lie.
Filmaker Bhavna Talwar, whose Dharm was considered by the authorities, said that she was 'bored' watching the movie and could not 'connect' to any of the characters. Vidhu, referring to the statement, said:
The young filmmaker whose film hasn't gone, I heard, she has said in Mid Day that Eklavya was a boring film. I can tell her, I saw your film, and I thought it was a load of shit. It's immature, childish.
A movie like Dharm cannot really be called 'immature' or 'childish' at all. Perhaps, Mr. Chopra has taken it too badly.
