The upcoming ‘Bong’ actress Raima Sen thinks that there is absolutely no reason why one should be comparing her with her granny, the renowned Suchitra Sen.
She feels it is ‘ridiculous’ to draw a comparison. Referring to one of her contemporaries and her most promising rival, Konkona Sen Sharma, Raima points out that comparisons are never drawn between Konkona and her mother, the famous Aparna Sen. There is no need for such comparisons, she told IANS in an interview.

During her years in the film industry, Raima has been known for choosing unconventional roles. Her performance in films like ‘Godmother’, ‘Chokher Bali’ and ‘Parineeta’ has won her accolades. ‘The Bong Connection’ has been released last week, in which Raima plays a significant part.

She comes from a family with a notable background in the Bengali film industry. Not only is her grandmother actress Suchitra Sen a living legend, but her mother, Moon-Moon Sen is also a celebrated actress. Her sister Ria is an actress too. Ria and Raima had entered the film industry together.

About the comparative evaluation of her and her sister Ria’s career in films, Raima seems annoyed. She feels that they are both getting their ’share of work’, and are happy to coexist.

This is done only by the media. No one in the film industry compares us.

- she said.

Raima also rejects rumors that her parents, especially her mother Moon-Moon Sen, meddle with her choice of projects. She said that the decision is completely hers whenever she considers a project, and her parents don’t interfere at all in the process of assessment.

They only come to watch the premieres of my films. Also, I deliberately do not discuss films with my granny, as it is a completely personal relationship that we share

- she confirms.

Raima has received critical praise for her performances, but till date, she has been unsuccessful in getting lead roles in mainstream Hindi films. According to Raima, she chooses her projects on the basis of the director, producer and the script.

The main lead is not a priority for me.

- said Raima.

She points towards the recently released film ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd’, in which she played a part, to substantiate the fact that she is very much into commercial ventures as well. She thinks it is ‘a matter of time’, and believes in slow but steady improvement. The other reason why Raima is very careful in choosing her projects, as she said, was that the Bollywood film industry is not ‘heroine-oriented’, and she does not want to end up doing ’solo films, which are not watched by people.’

About her latest venture, ‘The Bong Connection’, a film by Anjan Dutt, Raima seems quite excited.

The film should set a trend for Bengali cinema, which is changing with the taste of people. Today more independent cinema is coming up in the industry

- she said.

Raima’s approaching assignments include Navdeep Singh’s ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’, a suspense story where she stars along with Abhay Deol and Gul Panag. She is also to be a part of Aparna Sen’s ‘Japanese Wife’, Rituparno Ghosh’s ‘Khela’, Venod Mitra’s ‘Meridian’, Mira Nair’s film on AIDS and Ruchi Narayan’s forthcoming film.
