It seems like Bollywood is taking a break from its ongoing tradition of sequels and remakes and is now ready to plunge into a totally different genre of prequels, which has been never experimented with before in Bollywood.

Reportedly a production house has got the official remake rights to Sholay, which includes the rights to make prequels. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says:

And in the age of the multiplex , when directors and audiences are willing to make different kinds of movies, and audiences being more receptive to them, it could work.

As already witnessed, the kind of expectations a sequel raises, we just cannot estimate the kind of hype a prequel could generate. But director Rakesh Roshan has different stance to it:

It depends on how you present the film. The original will have no bearing on the prequel as long as the content is engrossing.

Anil Nagrath, secretary of the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association, says:

But a prequel is a new thing for Bollywood and it would be interesting to attempt one. We already know how it would end and making a movie showing how the characters got where they are in the original is something that could be depicted well. A prequel to Sholay could be about Jai and Veeru as young boys and how they became thieves, or about how Gabbar became a dacoit. The possibilities are endless.

With RGV’s remake of ‘Sholay’ turning down to ashes, will a pequel to it help sustain the magic? However such a venture has failed to appeal to the audience in some of the Hollywood flicks earlier, let us see whether Bollywood hits the bull’s eye or not!
