Critically acclaimed actor Paresh Rawal made it clear in one of his recent interviews that he is strictly against remakes.
Remakes have appeared as recent phenomenon in Bollywood despite their failure in box-office. Rawal explained that most of the time the films are mutilated or spoilt consequently depriving it of the magic and aura of the original work.
Filmmakers should not venture into remakes if they cannot avoid that.
When pointed out that his soon to be released ‘Bhool Bhulaiya‘ is itself a remake of a Malayalam film, he said that he worked in this remake only because it is made by the original’s director.’Bhool Bhulaiya’, a remake of the Malayalam hit ‘Manichitratazhu’, is directed by Priyadarshan. Priyadarshan was at the helm of the original too.
On inquiry as to whether there was any film in his opinion that should never be remade, the classy actor named three films, they being ‘Guide’, ‘Ganga Jamuna’ and ‘Mughal-E-Azam‘. According to him, these films truly portray Indian culture and ethos. He says,
They are true classics which each and every Indian cherishes. They should remain as they are.
Rawal preferred not to comment much when asked to do so in regard to the recent remakes like Umrao Jaan and RGV’s Aag.
The actor managed to express his sharp disapproval without sounding rude as he said,
What can I say? I cannot stop anyone from exercising their creative freedom. I have watched these films, but I would not like to say anything more.
