In his third offering as a director Anurag Kashyap brings out a movie which probes into the unpleasantness of city slickers. The movie though created a lot of buzz around itself, but failed to make a strong impression on its audiences in its opening day. No Smoking is about a chain smoker’s effort to bid adieu to smoking. The movie revolves around K (John Abraham) a rich and powerful chain-smoking businessman’s effort to quit smoking after his lady love, his wife(Ayesha Takia) threatens to abandon him.
K’s friend Abbas(Ranveer Shourie) who had introduced him to the butt, packs him off to an underground rehab center run by the viciously alive Baba Bengali Sealdahwala (Paresh Rawal) whose ideas of reform are different from the usual “twelve steps” program. The movie is set in three places across the world namely India, Azerbaijan and Russia.
Though the filmmaker has structured the events in a strange way and a unique format, the opening day did not see much of applause from the audiences. The movie has big names like John Abraham and Bipasha Basu yet failed to impress the Indian minds and saw a downfall in creating a lasting impact in their cinematic experience. One drawback of the movie would be that it reaches its climatic moments only to pause and jump back to the past. As a viewer such intricate films can be complicating and not welcomed as much into the cinema houses.
Meanwhile, the star actor John Abraham was found himself promoting the movie to in Indore where he took an oath along with 10,000 students against smoking. With such extensive promotional activities going on for the movie an opening day cannot be banked upon for its overall success. The main motive of the stars and the director is to make this nation a no-smoking zone. Though it is a huge ask they would be hoping to atleast spread a positive word around cautioning the effects of smoking. Though the movie may not do as well at the Box Office, kudos to the director who seems to have taken the onus to eradicate the evil of smoking and sticks to his kind of cinema often considered as dark cinema.
