Everybody recalls Vidya Balan as the damsel from Parineeta and the chirpy radio jockey from Lage Raho Munna Bhai. Although, Vidya made appearances in 3 movies after Lage Raho Munna Bhai (Guru, Salaam-e-Ishk, Eklavya), she is not remembered to be there in these movies. This is largely due to the small roles that she has been doing off late.
Even in her latest appearance in Hey Baby, where she plays the role of a betrayed girl, she fails to make a mark. All the people could see is that she has added a few pounds to her weight. She will be next seen in Priyadarshan’s comic flick, Bhul Bhulaiyaa. Here again, she has the odds stacked against her as she is opposite Shiney Ahuja. If we remember, Shiney Ahuja has been in the critic’s good books for excellent performances in the past.
There is a general feeling that Vidya Balan is not the type to be playing against someone new like Shiney Ahuja. She looks more suited for classy actors like Shahrukh Khan (The Mast Kalandar song from Hey Baby had Shahrukh Khan giving a special appearance and the few moments of them together were worthy watching), Saif Ali Khan or even Amir Khan or Ajay Devgan. Vidya thrives on serious and semi serious roles and the immensely hit movies like Parineeta shows it. She thrives more in roles that have a tone of seriousness about it.
Maybe, it is time for Vidya to look for roles that suit her rather than choose anything for the sake of doing things.
