Anil Kapoor’s ambitious project Gandhi, My Father was given a World Premier in South Africa. Political maverick Nelson Mandela and South African cabinet including President Thabo Mbeki exalted the occasion.

Why South Africa? Anil Kapoor elucidates:

South Africa is where the journey of Mahatma Gandhi started. What better country than South Africa to have the world premiere?

Besides Anil Kapoor, the cast and crew of the film including Anil’s wife Sunita, Feroz A Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bhumika Chawla, Shefali Shah and Darshan Jariwalla met Mr. Mandela too. Anil Kapoor is, particularly, stirred by the remarkable rendezvous:

Mandela talked about his visit to India; he thought highly of Mahatma Gandhi. I invited him to India again.
He is 87 years old, but undeniably the most charismatic man I have ever met, possessing a tremendous sense of humor.

Mandela had once remarked,’ India gave us Barrister Gandhi and South Africa gave back Mahatma Gandhi the great soul”. But this time he had more to appendage:

We have seen, heard and read about many aspects of Gandhi’s life through various mediums. We have even drawn inspiration from him to fight for justice and truth. However, this unique story of a father coming to terms with his family is instructive and deeply moving.

Gandhi, My father is largely based on Feroz Abbas Khan’s play ‘Mahatma Vs Gandhi’. The movie demystifies The Father of the Nation and speaks of Gandhi as a Family Man and most effectively A Father, a normal human with his flaws and failings.

Akshaye Khanna plays the mutineer and heart-broken son. The luminous World Premier buzz would add to movie’s anticipation in India. The movie releases on Aug 3 in India.
