Shakespeare has inspired yet another Bollywood filmmaker, this time with Hamlet, is Sudhir Mishra, whose film will combine the popular with the arty. According to him his upcoming venture will use Hamlet’s dilemma to explore the sleaze and sordidness of contemporary Indian politics.
Bollywood has earlier also successfully adapted Shakespearean tragedies like Macbeth (Maqbool) and Othello (Omkara), shaping their political tone to contemporary Indian settings.
The flick tentatively named ‘Devdas’ claims to be an out and out thriller. The movie’s protagonist is born into a political family and is exposed to corruption and manipulation. It also portrays two strong women characters, one who uses marriage to climb the social ladder and the other who is a keeper of grim political secrets.
Revisiting his mastered and favourite Bollywood field of politics, Mishra, whose previous film, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, was also a political satire says:
Though I have drawn inspiration from two brilliant works, my film will put the protagonist in a modern day scenario.
The film starts its first shooting schedule this month, pushing our thoughts one more time towards our rotting political system.
