Chak De India, due to release on Aug10, with stern terror from Jackie Chan’s Rush Hour 3 which releases worldwide on the same date, has some lesser known stories behind the final product.
The movie has a concurring blend of Actors and professional hockey players for the roles. The actors had to be taught hockey and the players went over their lines, over and over, in acting classes. Hockey crackerjacks like Dhanraj Pillai and Mir Ranjan Negi aided to groom ‘the team’, to make it a look-alike professional hockey team on-screen.
Shahrukh Khan had played hockey in school and this helped his acrobats on wide screen (but SRK admits girls were better). But still SRK had to read and learn about hockey. He understood the commands of the whistles to get into the character, with a know-how notion.
The next difficulty for the film unit was to get people to the stadium, as some scenes in the movie were hockey matches, which required crowded stadiums. So while shooting in Australia, people were invited to see the shooting of the movie. As always SRK is a crowd puller, the formula worked and the swarm of people fulfilled the jam-packed stadium’s requisite.

And the hockey stick that SRK uses in the film, is not his own. Actually, it belongs to the director Shimit Amin who bought it after reading the script for the first time to study it. As the movie progressed SRK did lot of practice and shots with that stick and kept it with him and yes, it’s the same stick which we see in posters and trailers.
SRK has also done the opening scene stunt in the movie himself. It was difficult, because due to the multiple camera coverage and continuity he had to perform the stunt 8 times and he did it with accurate continuity! The shot remains in the film.
Whatever may be the movie’s box-office exploits, but Chak De India is definitely a well researched movie with slogging ‘behind the frame’ effort.
