This time it is Anurag Basu who is going to follow in the footsteps of KL Siagal, Bimal Roy and Sanjay Lela Bhansali, as the director is all set to embark the production of modern version of Devdas with Abhay Deol in the lead role.
But if you guessed that new Devdas would also be an adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chatterjee’s best seller... then you are mistaken. Well, not exactly the same as it will be in sync with the young generation of today and will showcase how modern Devdas is perceived in today’s time as he deals with present issues.
The movie will be called Dev.D and will have Abhay Deol as Devdas, Mahi Gill, a known Punjabi actress will play the role as Paro and Dibyendu Bhattacharya will play Chunilal’s character. Basu is still to cast someone as Chandramukhi. Vikramaditya Motwani will be doing the screenplay of the film.
Anurag was motivated for new Devdas when he was approached by Abhay Deol with an idea of making Modern Devdas. Actually it was Abhay and his friend Devika Bhagat who developed the idea and informed him during the Football World Cup last year.
Speaking on Dev.D Anurag said:
It’s in the writing process and it’s too early to talk about. All the characters will be the same but with a completely new take on it. It’s a completely realistic and today’s film. He will be seen in modern clothes like jeans and T-shirts. He will fight too.
Let’s wait and watch to see, how Dev.D turns out and whether it will be able to stand with other three movies or not.
